Memories of 2013 part 4: seiyuu jokes in my anime

As always - though it hasn't been particularly obvious over the last two years, methinks - one of my posts is going to be about my greatest obsession in anime: the seiyuu.

This time, it's not specifically going to be about my favourites (though I LOVE You-kyan in Senyuu and almost cried when Sakku returned in the Monogatari series), but rather about the little amusing things that only seiyuu fans would notice on a first time watch.

On the Second Day of Christmas Anime Gave to Me 2 Seasons of Valvrave

Oh my anime why did you gave me Valvrave and two seasons of it?!?! It was bad from start to now (Still have to wait for the conclusion next year). It had the infamous Valvrape scene which had little to no consequences, it consisted of vampires with Geass like powers. It was all a little bit ridiculous but it wants to be taken seriously. It also shows us how low Sunrise has fallen since those heights with Code Geass. Sure the animation was good but as stated earlier the story is and will always be too ridiculous to ever be taken seriously unless it is actually a parody (see Poe's law). To be honest the second season is much better than the first season but it is still bad in what has been a slightly above average season.
Full Post

Valvrave the Liberator, another wasted potential by Sunrise

If Code Geass and Gundam Seed ever has a kid together Valvrave is likely to be the outcome, truly a mixed bag from the beginning until the end. I have marathoned the series from 2 weeks ago until the last episode of the second season that i watched today. I have expected the Valvrave to be disappointing as Sunrise doesn't make any good mecha anime anymore but i am rather sad the good mecha designs are wasted in some worst possible way. Valvrave just shows how High school hijinks and mecha does not mix really well and while the main character is Beta guy, he still got some redeemable factors with him whereas the main heroine represents every worst thing in the anime. Valvrave could have been a decent mecha series but unfortunately most of the aspects in the anime are ended prematurely thus the anime does not have any lasting impression that it could give and i feel the story direction is rather indecisive.

Nevertheless Valvrave still got some redeeming values which is why i said at the beginning it is a mixed bag, L-elf is rather well written character which unfortunately paired with Beta protagonist and the fist fight between them on 22nd episode is some of the best scene in the series. The Valvraves itself is rather good looking mecha and kinda remind me of Aquarion for some reason though i really feel the true power of each Valvraves are not shown in the anime. With how the 2nd season wrapped up it seems there is a possibility for continuity of the series but i am not too optimistic about that either. Nevertheless if Sunrise ever make another mecha series better they abandon the high school BS or else it will not be a good mecha title ever.

12 Days of Anime #1 Moment of the Year

The most impactful moment of the year for me is a speech, which ran more or less continuously for nine minutes. That's quite a long speech, and something that is easy to mess up, which makes how great it is all the more impactful. The speech in question appears in episode 9 of Maoyu (Maoyu Maou Yusha / Demon King and Hero), which aired this year. "The Red Scholar" spread knowledge and science to better the lives of the hungry poor, which has the political Central Church denounce her as a heretic, and then she gets a chance to make a speech in front of the people, a very moving speech, a defiant speech, about life, and the human spirit. .

"I am human!" - A moment of triumph of the human spirit.

12 Days of Meditations: Character vs Plot

Merry Christmas! For this year, I'd like to talk about anime, and not just specific shows that I watched this year. I'd still mention some of them, don't worry! It's just that enough people are doing that already, so I'd like to bring something new to the table.

This year, I started writing harder. Not hard enough as I would like to, but it's a start, and one of the steps I took was educating myself by reading writing books.

MangaUK reveal three new licenses in Christmas podcast!

Today is Christmas Eve! Although Manga Entertainment UK decided not to give everyone an actual physical present (I guess to be fair, that would be expensive). However, they did give us a special treat for the end of the year - three new license announcements!

HIGHSCHOOL DXD, the popular ecchi fantasy series is the biggest name of the three. Super-pervert Issei Hyodo was a normal human before finding himself tricked into a date and ambushed by a fallen angel. The next morning, he wakes up to find beautiful and well-endowed third year student Rias Gremory lying naked in his bed (as you do). Rias reveals herself as a devil, revealing that she is the reason that Issei is still alive, but he is now a devil and she is his new master. A second season of the original 2012 anime aired this past summer. MangaUK will be releasing the series on both DVD and Blu-ray in 2014.

Journal Entry #2: Guilty Crown

AIR DATE: 14/10/2011 : END DATE: 23/03/2012 : STATUS: DroppedThe year is 2039. A biological hazard known as the apocalypse virus hit Japan on the 24th December, cultivating the decimation of the population. This event came to be known as Lost Christmas. Since Japan was in a weak position it called for aid from the rest of the world. In response the United Nations sent an organisation called GHQ to help contain the situation and in the process occupy Japan. With Japan at the mercy of foreign powers, a small group calling themselves funeral parlour began to rebel against the powers that be and GHQ in order to liberate Japan and regain it's independence.

Even MORE anime songs added to Wii Karaoke U!

Do you remember a while ago when I wrote about about Nintendo's Wii Karaoke U service adding Japanese songs to its already extensive portfolio of tracks? Well, today the European branch of the Kyoto-based company revealed that this library is ever growing, with 11 new songs added today - with nine of them having previously been used in anime, with the most notable from this batch being Shonen Jump franchises Naruto Shippuden and Bleach. Here is a full listing of available anime songs, with the new additions being in italics:

12 Days of Anime (2013)

Have you ever wondered what an anime would be like if it were shown through the eyes of another character? How might things be perceived or depicted if we heard it through someone else's voice?Would their priorities and preference impact the story differently? How would their observations or presence affect the story, too?Say, for example, if we saw NEON GENESIS EVANGELION through the eyes of Asuka or CODE GEASS from Suzaku's point-of-viewhow would these shows be affected?

If you've ever wondered about this or if you've ever wanted to see this in an anime, then you and I share similar thoughts.I always wonder about these irrelevant details and how an anime would be different if it were told through another character's perspective.Besides comedy episodes or OVAs or specials, anime rarely ever break their perspectives (and no, I'm not counting scenes where another character is doing something that is relevant to the story, those don't count), and I'm left with only my thoughts on how things would go if the perspectives were switched.Fortunately for me, MONOGATARI SERIES SECOND SEASON has blessed me with three arcs - that's right, three! - narrated from the perspective of characters other than Araragi: Tsubasa Hanekawa in Tsubasa Tiger (Nekomonogatari: Shiro), Nadeko Sengoku in Nadeko Medusa (Otorimonogatari) and Deishuu Kaiki in Hitagi End (Koimonogatari). This sudden and welcomed change in the series offered an outstanding experience for the viewers, providing us with opportunities to see and understand the world of Monogatari differently than if we were riding alongside Araragi again.

There's nothing like the anorexic character designs of the writing duo CLAMP, especially those for the Code Geass franchise.

Samurai Flamenco

I think my brains just exploded

I knew that this series would spiral out of control. Just not in this way. In one episode, the creators YET AGAIN completely changed the genre of the entire series, along with the feel, mood, themes and everything. At this point the only similarity between episode 1 and 11 is the way in which Samurai Flamenco appears in it. Even the mood-swings of Guilty Crown and Code Geass weren't this big!

One HELL of a Series (Anime Reviews)

Top 10 Favorite Anime Series

Ohayo everyone!

So I've been working on this one for a while. Was supposed to be done earlier this week but what with not having Internet on thanksgiving, and recording auditions for star wars, it got backburnered.

Anime Impressions Grab-bag (Fall 2013 Week 9)

I've decided rather than use a never-ending list of shows, that I'd talk each week (or so) about a few different shows. Though I wanted to make a post about several shows that need to "pick up", I'll cover the latest development in four shows, which I want to give some more time to. About a paragraph or two per show.

The shows I'll discuss in this post are Samurai Flamenco, Kyousougiga, Log Horizon and Nagi no Asukara. Expect spoilers for these shows.

Persona 5 Speculations

I have been writing a lot of Persona posts these days including a story based on Persona 3. Then again, the series had been the most interesting to talk about. Code Geass may have a movie coming (during R2 from what I heard) and a play and Kingdom Hearts has some news but not really enough to discuss since a lot of people can tell what would likely happen anyway (heck even Word of God said this is the last part dealing with Xehanort but not really the end of Kingdom Hearts as a whole), so really not much to talk about.

But I digress.

Digimon Adventure 02 Epilogue, a Minor Discussion

This ending was the culmination of the Digimon Adventure 02 and it shows just how much the writers just don't know where to go to the characters.

Short Time at Jack O' Con, Amazing Time at Kikori Con, Kamisama Kiss English Dub Cast Announced and the Great Debate- Dubbed Vs. Subbed!

Hey! Been awhile; sorry it took so long for this post. Took quite sometime to get the pictures from Tasha that she took at Kikori Con. Before I get to Kikori Con, I'll type about what happened at Jack O' Con. Just shortly after arriving Saturday morning, Jack O' Con was cancelled. We still really don't know exactly why the convention was cancelled, but a lot of people were pretty peeved about it. However just because it was cancelled we weren't going to let our 75 dollars go straight down the drain. I was able to meet Danielle McRae and Erin Fitzgerald so that was pretty awesome; plus Erin signed my Rune Factory 4 so I'm happy.

I wanted to see if Wendee Lee was there, but I chickened out haha.

We Production IG'd it up! Even though we were only at Jack O' Con for a few hours and we'll probably never get back our passes money or know the truth about its cancellation; it was pretty fun. Onto Kikori Con- Once we got to Flagstaff it reminded me of being in Chama somewhat; with all the forest trees and freezing cold temperature that I wasn't expecting >.< When we got to our hotel room that was like out there in Narnia from the con that was in the same hotel, I felt like we were in a European cabin haha. Forest cabin on the outside, European styled rooms on the inside.

12 Days of Anime

For those of you who don't know, the 12 days of anime is an event anibloggers engage in, where they relate 12 moments that are related to anime from the past year - moments which made them smile or angered them, from current shows or older, moments where they went to conventions, made dramatic poses, sung the Poke'Mon song at work, etc. Though I don't celebrate Christmas, I've decided to join in this year. Aside from my moments, I will also share moments provided by people on reddit, to whom I am thankful.

but without the free time, it's more like hell.

Time for Anime!

YES, I have recently got into anime, and out of respect for some of my new favourite cartoon shows, I decided to make the following list...

Summer Wars

During the month of December this year, Cartoon Network's revived Toonami block has been broadcasting a different anime movie each week for their Month of Movies, the first being the critically-acclaimed , based on a manga series of the same name. Following Akira is another, similarly acclaimed feature, this one being a movie originally released in 2009 titled Summer Wars, the subject of this review. While I had not heard of this movie before, an ad I saw for it while watching Akira made the premise sound intriguing, so I became more interested in watching it, even after having already recorded it. While it is certainly a much different type of movie than Akira, I ended up actually liking Summer Wars, even though it has a few issues regarding the use of technology.

In the future, online communication has advanced to the point where a service called OZ was created, which handles nearly everything in everyday life. Kenji Koiso (Michael Sinterniklaas) and his friend Takashi Sakuma (Todd Haberkorn) are a couple of students who work part-time jobs as OZ moderators. As the two guys are working, a friend of theirs, a girl named Natsuki Shinohara (Brina Palencia), walks in and, while initially jealous of their jobs, wants to invite one of them on a trip to celebrate the 90th birthday of her great-grandmother; Kenji ends up being the one to go. On the way over there, Kenji, when asked, reveals that he almost represented Japan in a math competition, which surprises Natsuki. Once the two arrive at their destination, Natsuki lies to her great-grandmother, Sakae Jinnouchi (Pam Dougherty), that she and Kenji are in a relationship, which is something Kenji is forced to go along with. That night, after meeting the rest of Natsuki's family that showed up, Kenji receives an e-mail through OZ, revealed to be a long string of numbers. Unaware of its purpose, Kenji cracks the code, getting a foreboding response from the sender. The next day, OZ has been hacked and malfunctioning, putting the entire world at risk. Realizing what he had just done and the news branding him as a criminal, Kenji must now figure out who was behind hacking OZ and put a stop to it before things get really out of hand.

The plot of Summer Wars is actually really interesting. The film has a handful of sub-plots that nicely feed into each other without one taking up too much focus, all of them neatly coming together in the end. While there is a fake-romance angle present in the movie, a lot of the OZ plot can get really suspenseful, especially towards the end. The story also moves along at a fairly decent pace, with a good amount of character development given to the main cast, including some to many members of Natsuki's family. There is plenty of drama to go around in this story without making the atmosphere thick with it, but that doesn't mean the movie doesn't know when to lighten up, and at times a given scene can become very funny to help soften the mood. Overall, the story has a more light-hearted atmosphere than plenty of other animated movies, Akira included.
